Neutral Buoyancy

Neutral Buoyancy is a video artwork that invites viewers into a liminal space, where the lines between floating and flying blur. First showcased as a large-scale projection at the National Aquarium during my artist residency, the video explores the transformative and healing power of water. In this piece, I am suspended in a perpetual loop—a visual meditation on the space between where I have been and where I am going.
Water holds profound significance, particularly for Black people, as the Atlantic connects us to our ancestors who were forcibly transported across its depths. Neutral Buoyancy honors this history while reimagining water as a source of healing, reclamation, and connection.
Inspired by the concept of "neutral buoyancy"—a state where one neither sinks nor rises—I consider this balance as both a metaphor and a goal. The work reflects my journey as an artist and healer, exploring what it means to be suspended in this equilibrium, within water and within life.
The video loops endlessly, creating a world where I seemingly live underwater indefinitely. This looping mirrors our collective human experience: moments of stillness, transformation, and surrender to the flow. By projecting this work within the Aquarium's immersive environment, alongside marine life and layered soundscapes, I aim to create a multi-sensory experience that invites viewers to connect with water, themselves, and the unseen.
For me, water is not just a physical space but a spiritual one. It is a place of remembrance, healing, and power—a gift from our ancestors that reminds us that we, too, belong to this element. Through this artwork, I hope to inspire others to reclaim their relationship with water and leave behind what no longer serves them, gifting it to the water, which can hold it all.
